I absolutely agree with you, and love d this post - as well as the opportunity to meet you on part of your NYC trip...I have some photos of our Vento/Blogher dinner I'll have to send you. I'm contemplating a move to the city and it's this very sense of magic that's pulling me, causing me to avoid the questions of financial solvency and living in the city not knowing anyone really well. I have two weeks to decide. Reading posts like this helps. : )

Are you kidding? I was lucky enough to grow up there. On the other hand, I am raising my kids in a small town and think there is much to be said for it, because I missed a lot in the city (no proms, no football games, none of the stuff I saw routinely on The Brady Bunch, my key to the rest of the country). But yes, I agree, the city is magical.BTW, thanks for your visit.

I think NYC is magical because my life feels so magical when I am there. It's so full of possibility!I just got back, too, after 7 days of greatness!Love that you got to see the oh-so-fabulous Jonathan! What did you buy the 'Cane?!

I haven't been since I was a teenager, but it was pretty magical then in a "small town girl sees the bright lights and big city for the first time" way.I just found out that I will be there in July for work (woot!) - so can I get back to you on the question?

i went for the first time in November (unless you count a JFK to laGuardia sunset busride, with NO stops, about five years ago). i was smitten.i felt like everywhere i looked was some kind of cultural reference, something i'd seen in movies or sung about in songs or whatever. it was all larger than life.plus i got the sense that absolutely every possible conversation, in every possible language, was happening somewhere in the city right at that second.already plotting how to get back.

First, yes oh yes, NYC is magical! It is my favorite place to be except anyplace with my boys when they are behaving and adorable. I can't wait to see it this Fall- it has been too long! Second, how can you leave us hanging like that? Any story that leaves you teary-eyed at the mere thought of it must be told pronto!

oh heck do i love nyc. we lived there 6 years and it still makes me nostalgic to even hear you mention the west village. and yes -- even living there, magical things happen all the time.here's my best nyc magic story:after i graduated from college, i worked at club med for a year, teaching sailing. one guest -- dave -- spent 2 weeks there and sailed every day. we became very good friends, in the way you are capable with a very compressed timeframe. we wrote letters for a few months and then that was that. he was in medical school in california, i lived in the caribbean. enough said.after club med, i moved to nyc. the first week after i moved into my apartment i was walking down the street with some friends, heading to dinner. someone stepped directly immediately in front of me. i moved out of the way without looking up (already the clever new yorker...) and kept walking. the same body stepped directly in front of me. again. so i started to say something and looked up. it was dave.he had finished med school and had just moved to nyc a month before. his apartment was across the street from mine. i was at 208 thompson, he was at 181.to this day, he is still one of my close friends.magic, i tell you. full of gifts. just like you say. thanks for your great writing.
