Oh Hi. I’m Going To Go Australia.

Australia it really is a big country

So remember last week I said I found out some big news when I went to New York the week before that? Well. It’s this. A few years ago I put four items on my life list that I was completely positive would never happen.

30. Visit Australia. See Sydney, Kata Tjuta, and a koala.

In fact, I was so sure they wouldn’t happen that I went ahead and put them all on one item…because not achieving one item is so much better than not achieving four.

Okay, now flip that.

Guess who is about to cross off one four (or six or ten) items on her life list? That’s right. This girl.

Thanks to Go Mighty , Tourism Australia and Air New ZealandJenny and I along with a few other bloggers are going to Australia in a few weeks. I’ll be the first to say, I have no idea what to expect. I’m kind of freaking out (in a good way) and I don’t even know what else to say about anything at this point. Except that, according to photos, they have really good sunsets in Australia.

I think Sean (another person who is going) summed it all up exceptionally well here. In fact, he nailed it. On the other hand, I am one who is slower to process things, but I am looking forward to talking a lot about it here in the next weeks. And I can’t even imagine what is going to happen when I board that crispy shiny new airplane with Jenny.

(Am I nuts that I’m really looking forward to the flying part? Hours of not being able to do anything other than read and eat and watch movies and sleep? That sounds ridiculously dreamy to me.)

And I can’t even imagine what adventures will lie before us when we land.

We’re going to land in another land. A continent I’ve never been to. A hemisphere I’ve never been to. I’m expecting my mind to be blown open. At the very least I’m expecting to hug a koala. According to Jenny I’m hugging a koala while I’m dressed as a koala. Or a panda. Or something. Clearly, I am boarding the train for a wild ride.

I’ve made a few more Australia goals since then (you can see all my life list items here…I think I have 10 Australian items so far) on Go MightyJenny’s are here. There is no telling what we’re going to get up to. And I’m not sure what I’ve gotten myself into.

But I can’t wait to get into it.

Come with me.

A huge thanks to Tourism AustraliaAir New Zealand and Go Mighty for making this adventure possible. If a trip Down Under is a dream you’ve had, please be sure to check out the Tourism Australia site for all sorts of information about Australia; in addition, Tourism Australia, Air New Zealand and Go Mighty are running two additional campaigns to help make your dream come true in 2014:  the first, Fill-A-Plane, where you can sign up to be one of 322 people to get a special discount on air travel for folks who take the pledge to travel to Australia next year; the second, “Win a Wild Card ticket to Australia,” for a chance to win a trip to Australia, by simply becoming a member of Go Mighty and adding your wildest Australia-based dreams.  You can check out all the details here. Jenny, Koala’s beware, indeed. They have no idea what’s about the hit them… (spoiler alert) It will be the naturally fighty kangaroos.

Can’t wait to read about everything from your perspective. If I’m not actually folding myself into your suitcase without your knowledge.

How fun! Have you read IN A SUNBURNED COUNTRY by Bill Bryson? My fave book about Australia. I recommend.

Favor: please get a photo of you throwing a shrimp on the barbie. I ask for so little. Humor me?

First – that koala is ridiculously cute and snuggly. Second – What fun!!! Looking forward to hearing all about it. I used to be a travel writer (never went out of the country, though). It’s so much fun to explore with a group (and to be a bit pampered). Enjoy!

I think it is a good sign – they are there to welcome you.

I’m sure you can all look forward to a very warm welcome when you arrive here in the wide, brown land – and a very busy and amazing time. I hope you get to see some of every state, but it’s a big country and the major centres are widely spaced.
Oh – and watch out for those koalas. They are not the worlds most continent creatures!

I can’t remember the name of the book about Alice Springs during WWII, but I’m sure you can google it. Good book!

The book Leslie is referring to is A Town Like Alice.

Welcome – I see on Twitter that you have landed. It is possible that you won’t get to Paradise, but the rest of the place isn’t that bad either!
