But man, I love The Rifles.

Tangled Up In Love is my current favorite.

I could listen to this song all day. And of all days to do it, this is a good one. We could all do well being a bit tangled up in love right now.

Because, man, people are all over the place emotionally today. I had a conference call this morning that represented the US populace…split in half in their happy returns. Of course, it’s not as simple as a color-coded map. A lot of people who live in red-colored states are so very thrilled and people who are living in map-colored-blue locations are well, blue. I had to turn off Facebook because the extremes of elation and anger and fear and complete celebration are just too raw to consume right now.

Instead, let’s focus on love in all its formats. There’s no other way.

I dare you (dare you) to listen to Bobby Jealousy’s Rainbow and not find yourself singing it throughout the day. Seriously. Go on. Consider yourself dared.

This band is swell. Austin-based, and comprised of the fiercely entertaining Sabrina Ellis, Seth Gibbs, Mark Stoney and Clint Simmons, they were named one of KUT’s 12 bands to watch for in 2012. (You can listen to a lot of their other songs here.) (UPDATE: Please note, according to a commenter on this site, the band is now made up of Seth Gibbs, Sabrina Ellis, and Adam Harlow.)

James saw them at Stubb’s a couple of weeks ago and raved about their live performance. And for example, here they are stripped down, live.

See? Just as good.

So 80 kabillion people are about to descend upon our city. And I couldn’t be more excited. I’m already filling my calendar with interesting parties (watch out, this blog is going to be filled with party shots and details over the next few weeks) and music too.

Last year, I way over-extended myself…because, let’s face it, SXSW is eternal, and when you live here, people just keep coming in, and there are things to do, and the next thing you know, you have The Bird Flu. Oh yes you do.

But this year, I’m going to pace myself. Did you hear that? You can totally use that against me in two weeks when I have The Bird Flu. But until then, let’s preview some music.

UME. I’m exceptionally excited about seeing this group perform live. For real.

 


Quiet Company. I’ve been listening to Quiet Company’s 3rd album “We Are All Where We Belong” on a loop this week. I can’t wait to see them!

 


Wild Moccasins.  I’ve never seen them live either, but it’s time. I love female lead singers….

 


Young Magic. These guys are new to me. But their sound is addictive.

 


Rosie and Me. You guys know I have a love for these bluegrassy sounds…

No big plans. I do want to clean the house, open the doors and turn up the music. And here’s what I’m listening to.

Violens sound like 1983 to me. And I plan to listen to a lot of 1983 this weekend. Seriously. I feel like I’m in 7th grade right now. And if you can’t relate to any of this because you were born in 1988, I have nothing to say to you about that.

The Virgins sound like the 80s too. But later. Like 87. Probably you were born by then.

If I ever need energy, I put on Santigold. Seriously. Try it.


And a little Young and the Giant too. Just for happiness.

And this is my favorite song right now: Betty Wang by Hospitality.  I want to invite Betty Wang over for lemonade. I’m going to do that this weekend. Or go to Harry’s basketball game and make Valentines. One of the two.

Rogue Wave is a swell California band. Thier song Harmonium was released a while ago, I think 2007, but it’s currently featured on an MLS Soccer commercial that plays very often in our home.

Because they’ve been playing non-stop in our house for a while now. Especially since their new album Golden came out about a month ago. The Tontons (Asli Omar, Tom Nguyen, Adam Martinez, Justin Marinez) are a severely talented group of people, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for them. They’re going to be huge.

Go and listen to then right here.  You won’t be disappointed.

My favorite is the title track: Golden.

And they are exactly that. Enjoy.

I’m spending a lot of time in these barns. Looking through the artifacts of love ones’ lives. And even though it’s stupid degrees outside, I feel so lucky to be given the task. It’s a sober rush of nostalgia, intrigue and pride, tied up with a quiet reminder of how short our time here really is. I swear, if these barns could speak, they’d be telling me exactly that…intertwined with a few hundred hilarious stories. And if they could sing, they’d sound like this….
