(They would be putting the shoes in the hallway in hopes that St. Nicholas would visit and leave treats for the all of the children.)

The next day, James sent me the above photo,  followed by an apology email to Harry’s teachers:

“Harry insisted that kids were bringing large boots.  I am sorry for the monstrous boot of mine that he brought.  He thinks he is so funny!”

More boot, more candy. Obviously.

This kid.

It’s one thing that you’re all over my Facebook, Twitter & Instagram pages…jolly-ly hanging him from lighted bunting banners, setting him up with a fishing rod over a toilet filled with goldfish crackers, covering him and your entire kitchen with flour to realistically depict his middle-of-the-night gingerbread cookie making bender.  Whatever. I can deal with  you. But your kids are killing me.

It’s a nostalgic thing for me…a birthday party like I remember them, an old-school gathering at home. I had a fun theme in mind, some tricks up my sleeve, and the whole thing was going to be really swell. But Harry had other ideas. He wanted to go to Jumpoline… a gigantic room full of trampolines, which is super fun and a complete assault on the senses. Terrible lighting, pounding music, and jumping jumping jumping. So that’s what we did.

And Harry loved it.

It was a pounding blur of delightful energy and constant movement.

A perfect tribute to my favorite seven year old.

I love this photo. Me and Victor (Jenny‘s husband) laughing along with 350 others as she did her reading in Austin at Book People… right after she found out she is #1 on the NYT Best Seller list.

The whole evening was such a celebration!

But no more. The hot weather means less clothing and that means more vegetables. It’s basic math.

Also, we’re growing lots of things in the back yard. And they’re all completely legal. And full of nutrients.

I’m going to be talking about this more than usual over the next weeks.

But then it turned into something about Beyonce and gender equality and pantsing.

It includes a few choice quotes from Harry:

Harry regarding the GOP candidates: “It’s weird, Mom. They all have white skin and they’re all boys. None of them have dark skin like our normal President. That’s weird.”

Harry regarding Beyonce: “I don’t like this song. It’s mean. Why do they say only girls run the world? Boys can run it too, can’t they? Why can’t it just be people run the world?”

Harry regarding Friday night: “We saw the Olive Godtrotters! And they pulled their pants down! And it was awesome!”

It’s the week before Christmas, and all thorough my mother in law’s house, I’m coughing and sneezing, and really just trying not to get everyone else sick. I’m not myself. My voice is almost gone. My head is stopped up. My face is swollen. I’m hopped up on cold medicine. And I’m borderline hibernating until I can shake this thing.

I hope your week is much more holly and jolly.

Drink some egg nog for me.

And today, as I watch Harry get ready for tonight (Darth Vader in the house!), I’m reminded that there’s power in putting on a costume. I wrote about it today on Hitting Refresh.

“I know tonight, as little kids everywhere don their fantastical princess outfits, their super hero leotards of justice, or (in our case) their super evil Darth Vader garb, for just a few hours, they’re becoming something completely different…and something completely themselves too.”

Do you ever feel that way?

You know. That way, where you have so many things to do, so many things you really want to do, that you don’t know where to start?

I feel like that every other minute.

So.

I’m going to start by eating a salad.

And then I’m going to do a bunch of things. Because I’m over it. I’m climbing out.
