May Resolutions.

I'm a slow moving train. Meaning, for instance, I may shake my fist in the air and make solid New Year's resolutions; but it may take me about 194 days to actually get around to doing any of them. (They're called May Resolutions because they May get done by October, right?)

So when I said I was making our dining room into something else. I was serious. I just haven't figured out what yet.

Although this photo got me thinking...
This photo is from West Elm.
I was initially digging the cubes featured on Cool Stuff con Queso.

The problem is the 1930s chandelier in our dining room. It's a nice retro piece. And it will be a pain in the arse to move. Oh and also, I'm exceptionally lazy, and I don't want to mess with it. So. Is it weird to have a chandelier in the middle of your office/reading/personal space? I think it probably will be. Hm.

Any designers out there with any ideas?

(And before you suggest it, Super Zoe, I've already thought of a disco ball...again, too much work. When you're idea-ing, please consider my massive amounts of laziness.)

My girl friend made her dining room into a Master Suite and left the chandelier right were it was. I thought it look cool. That works for lazy.. right?!? :) Love the pic.

I am far from a designer but if you are planning to have a desk in the room, how about putting that under the chandelier?

Or honestly, if the chandelier isn't too low then it doesn't matter if you have furniture under it or not--I'm sure it will look cool.

Hmm... you know how you can hang a chandelier at one point, and swing the chain over and dangle the actual thing at another point? I don't know if this is making sense.... but maybe if you had a long enough chain, you could swing the thing (heh heh) the the part of the room you would like it to dangle over. But then again, it might look ridiculous. Your call!! :) :) :) :) MAY THE LUCK BE WITH YOU!

Although I am not a designer by no means, would it really look that bad with that decor?? I love that pic - I refuse to have anything that pretty until my kids (who break everything) move out.

I'm no designer but I'd either be leaving the chand or replacing it with a ceiling fan. Because I have become obsessed with ceiling fans.

Maybe I'm functionally obsessed?

I've got nothing for you, babe, but I'm coveting that room in West Elm. Heck, I'm coveting most of the stuff in West Elm.

What Saracool said... we just did that in our dining room / turned playroom. And we made it a little bit higher by using a garbage bag tie and twisting the links together... :-)

I love that West Elm room...

Lala, the chandelier IS oh-so-fab! I totally acceptable alternative to the disco ball/black light that I was going to suggest.

GcQ, I thought the area looked fab a few weeks ago, but I dig what you are saying about needing a change.

My new house? Big chandelier right in the middle of the study.

Chandeliers are good everywhere. Bathrooms, bedrooms. One can never have too many chandeliers.

I've always wanted to do an asian themed dining room, with a low table and pillows to sit on. Maybe a zen garden, some bonsai trees, and chopsticks to catch flys with.

Bones, may I suggest a disco ball and karaoke machine to add to your plan?! Karaoke is very Asian.

Attach another dining light and swag to corner. I am lazy too, but I think I could muster it up for a swag.

How right you are, SZ. In fact, karaoke and karate have the same Japanese root. Kara = empty, and oke= orchestra, or in the case of karate, te means hand. Empty hand- martial arts with no weapons. Empty Orchestra- really bad versions of Sweet Caroline, Love Shack, and Total Eclipse of the Heart.

i AM a designer. and i agree wholeheartedly with jenny -- chandeliers everywhere. the more unexpected the place, the better! we have a fabulous old chandelier from my grandmother, but when we moved into our new house there was already an equally fabulous chandelier hanging in the dining room. so we hung ours in the hallway and we love it there.

can't wait to see pictures of your new space!

I'm with Jenny-love chandeliers everywhere. I also love to mix styles if possible.
