If Singing Outloud In Public is Wrong, I Want to Be Right
So, I have these songs that are stuck in my head. About 10 of them. And they've been there for a while now. Not even mentions of annoying Neil Diamond songs or repetitive plays of Justin Timberlake tunes will cure me. Not even. It's gotten so bad with some songs, that the other day I was at work, reading the paper (part of my job is to read the paper, I swear, it's in the description) while apparently singing out loud...something I probably shouldn't be doing at work or really anywhere...when the owner of my company and two clients walked in. That's right. And I didn't even realize I was doing it. Falsettoing. Loudly. The crack is that good. So I'm sharing some with you. Plus, Lala and the happy Smiling Mom mememememememed me about this a while back, and I'm finally pushing play. So, here you go. Better late than ever.
The 7+3 songs I've been listening to lately. A lot. And singing outloud in public.
(Oh, and I went ahead and made an iTunes playlist for you so you can get them in your head too. Because dealers are giving, at first.)
Born to Please - Sound Team (My current fave, great Austin band)
Lost in the Plot - The Dears (Reminds me of the Smiths, makes me happy)
You Stole the Sun from My Heart - Manic Street Preachers (Old song but it somehow made a comeback in my cranium)
Grace Kelly - Mika (Freddy Mercury meets Robbie Williams)
Mornings Eleven - The Magic Numbers (Hooray for them)
Remind Me - Royksopp (Yes, it's the song from the Geico commercial)
Satellite - Guster (Brand new, oh so good)
Sparrow - Scattered Trees (From the good people at Starbucks)
Just for Now Live - Imogen Heap (Addictive crack that gets in your head and makes you crazy)
Simple- k.d. lang (Beautiful)
What's in your head these days?

On more than one occassion I was caught dancing to the songs in my head in the front of my classroom while my students were taking a quiz or test. Silent, but deadly.
Oh, Sabrina, me too! They also often caught me singing while grading.
GcQ, as usual, you and HcQ have musical tastes far too esoteric for me. I am listening to the RENT soundtrack, Nickel Creek, Elliott Smith, and yesterday I not only listened to Barry Manilow all day...I brought down three co-workers with me.
isn't it funny that the Smiths - and people who sound like them - make us happy?
i've got that Imogen Heap song stuck in my head, too. :)
guster is so good. I liked them better when nobody knew about them, because I felt cool.
I love the Grace Kelly song.
About a month ago a blogger I read regularly entitled her post "Let's talk about sex, bay-bee." (Her post was really about her struggles with infertility, not so much about sex.) But for three weeks I could not get that song out of my head. And it would pop into my head at the most inappropriate times. I was so afraid I was going to burst out singing it--yeah, at work or wherever!
Puff the Magic Dragon. But in the garbled rendition offered by my 3 year old: Puff went the magic dragon, lived behind the sea, if you ever saw him...(fades)
Ever since I saw that video of Imogen on your cool stuff site I've been HOOKED. I bought that exact (live) version on iTunes the other day but I've also bookmarked your post because my daughter and I can't stop watching it. Imogen is immensely talented. I'm so grateful that you posted that video!
I don't know ANY of those songs!
Okay I dont know what rock I crawled out from under, but I do not know any of these songs. Damn, I just thought I was hip.
Everyone else has like cool songs...
I have "Should've Known Better" by Jim Damond.
"I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I... should've known better"
GcQ, you're the coolest with a capital OO.
Here's what's spinning round-and-round my head:
- Holla - G. Love
- Hide & Seek (still) - Imogen
- Casimir Pulaski Day (still) - Sufjan Stevens
- I Summon You - Spoon
- Arbuckle's Swan Song - Ambulance LTD
- Mr. Tough - Yo La Tengo
- Big Boat - M. Ward
But I'm gonna go listen to what's in your head now. Hopefully it'll displace some of mine.
Lonely Road- Everlast
Hips Don't Lie-Shakira and Wycleff (It was my ringtone for a while--it's my secret shame)
Don't wait too long- Madeline Peyroux
Fruit Salad- The Wiggles...yummy, yummy!
My darling daughter sings and she gets ready for school and I find that her fun little songs (sometimes really annoying high school musical songs) get stuck in my head and I can't get them out for the rest of the day. Not what you wanted to hear, but honest.
I have a Cat Stevens humming problem. The sound of my own voice hurts me cause I'm tone deaf, but I DO like to hum.
Your taste in music is fantastic
yeah, but do you ever get that thing where you'll have two or three songs stuck in your head, and after a while they will start creating unholy mashups in your brain? i think you should be able to call in sick to work for that one.
