Tickled.
I used to often say that January was the brown dress in the back of your closet month. That it represented this brownest, most boringest clothing item you owned because it was hands-down the most boringest month of the year. I'm pretty sure I even wrote about that when used to write a fashion column (Because, apparently, you can use words like boringest in fashion columns.) (And Ha! I used to write a fashion column. Super Zoe can you even beeelieve that?!) back in the day, before gum was invented. But that was long before brown became the new black, and orange became the new brown, and pink became the new orange. So, really, when you think about it, by the laws of transverse property, the laws of boomerang trends, and the laws of the state, this clearly means that brown is the new pink. Which means, January is all about pink. And if you followed that, then you're completely drunk. Cheers.
And cheers again. Because it's 2007.
And just as fashion has changed a bit, I guess my mind has changed too. Because I no longer think January is Boring McBrown. I think it is fantastically pink. It's new. It's fresh. It's clean. It's basically like calling do-over in a game of Go Fish. You totally get to start over. If you want to. And in some ways, I think I do.
Like with my closet for instance. This is another post entirely, and so it will be. But it's a work in the works. Oh and I'm taking up green tea as a coffee replacement. Or at least a partial replacement. And for sure I'll be eating more oranges. And smiling more. Those aren't resolutions, per se. They're just things I'm thinking on and starting up again. Or starting over on. Or with. Or in. Or whatever. But the reality is, they're my new things. They're soooo 2007.

And so is pink. Because it seems there are a lot of new and fantastic pinks being born to some of my favorite pinks around here...like baby Lydia, baby Tate, and the anticipated (and sassy) baby Flossie and baby Smith. (Of course, baby Atticus and sweet new baby Finn are the exceptions, but seriously, someone has to date all these little girls!)
Oh and Liz/Mom101's new baby. In fact, she wrote about her little one here, and I thought her recount was so good, I nominated it for a Perfect Post. And it totally is.New babies (and before you get too excited mom, let's be clear, there are no new baby announcements being made around here), new boots, new ideas, new goals, new possiblities. You have to admit, that's totally pink. And that's totally 2007.
Happy new year, people.

Oh no something must have been in my coffee because I completely followed your Pink theory.
I'll tell you what was never in, brown and orange at the same time. Nope but for some reason these were my school's colours. Believe me when I say that no one looked in school spirit.
What a great choice for a Perfect Post!
Is your calendar Chinese? If so, then no problem, I followed the pink theory just fine! It'd be crazy if I didn't since my house is ruled by pink.
However, I'd always called December the Pink Month.
Jenny sent me to check out your blog. Cool!
Happy Pink 2007
If brown and orange are now in, will McDonalds have to pick a new color scheme that subconsciously makes people leave the restaurant after 10 mins?
The two things that go together worse than any two things, in my opinion, are nuts and gum. Being that I’m colorblind, what is the color equivalent of nuts and gum?
Nuts and gum = Rust and Heliotrope
Nuts and gum = tartan plaid and polka dots. Really, it's personal choice. We all have our own personal fashion "nuts and gum."
I have a grammatical "nuts and gum" too, but will have to wait for someone to blog about it, I guess.
GCQ, I will be in town in 2 weeks if you want a closet cleaning collusion! You know how I love! And yes, I am still sulking that you got a fashion column and I didn't. Sigh.
And of course that's not your closet - you don't even wear those colors! If you had a two-color closet, it would be black and red/pink.
SZ, You're completely on. And, you're totally right. But I'll have you know I'm wearing Cerulean today.
I can't get past the picture of that closet.
I want my closet to look like that.
Can you guess what I'm wearing?
Purple is the new blue and red.
January in DC is dark, cold, and depressing. It's greasy grey. Brown actually sounds nice in comparison.
First of all, I love brown. It's not boring, its earthy and rich and deep. It reminds me of chocolate and sand and freckles and my husband's most-beautiful eyes. I wear it constantly. Too much, really. A woman at my old church used to call me brown girl...I need Super Zoe to be my personal shopper, as I would be a shoe in for "what not to wear."
Anyway, my main point is that I had no idea that you wrote a fashion column!!! The things you don't know about your family! When did you write this column? I bet it was great, being that you write so well and anything I own that is fashionable was a gift or hand-me-down from you. Can I read this column anywhere? Happy January! It was good to start off the year by seeing you.
1) happy new year!
2) that's my closet. the container store regularly shoots here at my house. you know. the one with the 4-yr-old twins.
3) nuts and gum = great blog name.
4) happy new year!
My little something pink was born in January and she completely changed my view of the month. Sweet and fresh is how I thought of January the year she was born. And now that she's four..it's more like sassy and a fresh mouth. But at least it's no longer brown. ;)
Great PP nomination - it was a wonderful post.
I love the pink theory and I agree! I totally followed it (in my own disturbed head...).
Love all the baby names you mentioned. It seems the trend towards "old fashioned" names continues. Love it. I need to hear more about the fashion column....
Off to read the perfect post nom....
pink is the new everything.
Bring on the pink!
My favorite is pink and brown together. I can't believe I followed your pink theory,it must be the sleep deprivation.
I got a Little Something Pink last June!
And as January is the month of my birthday and the start of the New Year, I love the idea of Pink for the month!!
All things pink was Big A's world until very recently. When we bought our new home, her bedroom was a very dusty rose--a hint of pink. She said she wanted it painted before she moved in. When I asked her why, she said it was pink, and she doesn't like pink anymore, pink is for kids. I said, well, mommy's gonna be busy, doing all this herself, so I'm not going to be able to paint. You can have sissy's room--it's yellow. (I left out that it's smaller, fewer architectural details, such as the lack of built in bookcases, dormer windows and coved ceilings.) I didn't need to state that, though, because Big A is smart. Whipper-snapper smart. Smarter than Mommy most days smart. But that's OK, cause I'm still bigger than her.
She's very happy with her dusty rose room. For now.
Glad I found you in the pink/brown of January...
Looking forward to going through your blog in good fashion.
Happy New Year, GcQ!
And I have a little almost-6-year-old someone who has changed my opinion of January. It used to be my most hated month too.
Well, as long as there are new boots, it's all good.
The joke with a couple of my friends is that because I'm colorblind I see everything in Hot Pink. If pink is the color of the month, then your travel destination should be my home, Sioux Falls. Our namesake (the falls on the Big Sioux River) flows over Pink Quartzite formations and many buildings are built from the beautiful stone. Here's a picture I took of the falls. I'll start cleaning the house for your visit.
A fashion column? How cool. I love clothes waay more than I should, but I'm more the cheap-skate fashionista.
ScQ, you have your very own style, as do your sibs GcQ and Gregory Grapefruit! You look fabulous in chocolate brown and sky blue (separately or combined) and I bet you look fab in the right shades of green (nothing too muddy or dusty). Pink (not too bright), black, and heather gray would be nice additions, too! You're fab just as you are.
I bet that lady who called you "brown girl" was totally jealous that you look so fab in brown!
When I was living in the UK I would have totally agreed with your brown dress theory for January. It's miserable weather, there is about 6 hours of light per day so you leave for work in the dark and get home in the dark and everyone is just a big old misery guts.
However, here in Australia, it's Summer and we have about 14 hours of lovely, lovely sunlight, my work has it's sales conference which means 3 days in the Hunter Valley drinking wine with my colleagues and we also have Australia Day to look forward toon the 26th of January, which means a public holiday and barbeques.
To me, January in Australia is a apricot sundress and thongs (on your feet!)
Your pink theory is totally the new grassy knoll theory.
PS. I plan on smiling more this year too. But just because it makes the bags under my eyes less noticeable.
Hi. I'm a friend of bek's. I usually lurk but I always love what I see.
Speaking of tickled, I would be tickled pink if you would be so kind to contribute a soup recipe to my current chain blog regarding soup. I do remember some wonderful pie recipes you posted awhile back, so I thought I'd see if you had a great soup recipe you'd be willing to share on my blog.
Thanks a bunch either way!
OMG - who are all your new friends, Quesito? I mean, one is your sister who didn't know you wrote a fashion column, but the rest? You are entering mega-bloggerdom.
Btw. Hello! Turns out I am drunk, thus I followed your logic perfectly. Except for the part where brown eventually became pink, and just because it was pink it seemed to perk you up. That totally undercuts the theory that the month in itself sucks, and makes it that the color associated with the month is what really matters.
Happy New Year to you! May pink brighten your year, girl. And may you publish all those fashion articles you wrote back in the day...
Woo-hoo 2007! Bring it on.
BTW: Those are the cutest baby names! Flossie is adorable. And Atticus . . .there may not be a more deserving character in fiction to name your baby after.
Well, not your baby of course. Your friend's baby.
what a deliciously random post! i love it so much, i'm going back to read it all over again. happy pink 2007!
x
ScQ and all, Like I said, it was so long ago, I think I wrote about the emergence of shoulder pads. It was a free rag in Htown. All the rage at the bus stop, back in the day. And all the copies were burned long ago.
Mark, Nice falls.
Lala, I'm jealous.
CW, I'm there with soup on.
Fiz, There you are!
All, Happy new year and I'm seriously frightened that you followed me there. Step away from the bottle. FDLFBD.
great post! I am really enjoying your writing :)
